Living for an Audience of One: Pleasing God Above All π₯π
In a world obsessed with likes, follows, and opinions, it’s easy to get caught up in seeking approval from people. But as followers of Jesus in the Christian tradition, we’re called to a higher standard—one empowered by the Holy Spirit—to live solely for God’s pleasure.
No one can serve two masters. You can’t chase human approval while fully serving Christ.
The Trap of People-Pleasing π©
Most people spend their days worried about what others think. Will they like my post? Will they approve of my choices? Will I fit in?
This constant pursuit steals our peace and distracts us from God’s calling. When we’re fixated on human opinions, we can’t fully embrace who God created us to be or step into the purpose He has for our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The truth is, you can’t please everybody. Even God Himself doesn’t please everyone! Someone prays for sunshine while another prays for rain. One cheers for victory while another roots for the opposing side. Trying to please the crowd leads only to exhaustion and compromise.
As Jesus taught:
“No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” — Luke 16:13 ESV
You must choose: God’s approval or man’s?
Jesus’ Perfect Example: Living for the Father Alone ✨
Jesus never chased popularity. Crowds cheered Him one day and crucified Him the next, yet He remained steadfast. He wasn’t manipulated by praise or fear of rejection.
His focus was singular:
“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.” — John 5:30 ESV
At His baptism, the Father declared:
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17 ESV
Jesus lived for an audience of one—His Father—and that’s why He could say, “I always do the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:29 ESV).
When we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), filled with the Holy Spirit, we become secure in our identity as God’s children, our purpose in His kingdom, and His constant presence. We no longer need validation from others.
Paul echoes this boldly:
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” — Galatians 1:10 ESV
And again:
“…so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts.” — 1 Thessalonians 2:4 ESV
Why People-Pleasing Blocks Your God-Given Purpose π«
When you’re worried about others’ opinions:
- You hide your gifts and calling to avoid criticism.
- You compromise biblical truth to fit in.
- You miss the freedom and boldness the Holy Spirit gives to live authentically for God.
You can’t fully realize your identity and purpose when fear of man controls you. True freedom comes when you seek God’s approval first—then everything else falls into place.
Practical Steps to Live for God’s Approval Only πͺπ
- Renew your mind daily with God’s Word—let Scripture shape your thoughts (Romans 12:2).
- Pray for the Holy Spirit’s filling—ask Him to empower you with courage and discernment.
- Examine your motives—in your goals, work, relationships, and decisions, ask: “Am I doing this for God or for people?”
- Remember Colossians 3:23 ESV: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”
When God’s “well done” becomes your greatest reward, life simplifies dramatically.
Talk It Over (Reflection Questions) ❓
- Why does worrying about others’ opinions hinder you from fully knowing your identity in Christ?
- Look at your top goals right now—whose approval is really driving them?
- How can immersing yourself in God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit help you prioritize His approval?
A Prayer to Seek God’s Approval Alone ππ₯
Heavenly Father,
I come before You today, humbled and desiring to live fully for You. Forgive me for the times I’ve sought the approval of people more than Yours. I confess that I’ve allowed fear of rejection or desire for praise to control my choices.
Thank You for the example of Jesus, who pleased You perfectly. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit so I can have the mind of Christ. Help me to seek only Your will, to speak and act in ways that honor You, not man.
I declare today: I choose to live for an audience of one—You, my loving Father. Let Your pleasure be my greatest joy. Guide my steps, strengthen my heart, and use me mightily for Your glory.
In the powerful name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
