It Is Finished: Tetelestai – Walking Through the Door to True Freedom ✝️
“It is finished.”
These three powerful English words come from one triumphant Greek declaration on the cross: τετέλεσται (tetelestai). Jesus didn’t whisper defeat—He shouted victory! The job the Father sent Him to do was fully completed. The debt was paid in full. The work of redemption was accomplished once and for all.
“After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished,’ and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:28-30 ESV)
As a believer filled with the Holy Spirit, you don’t have to strive for what Jesus has already finished. His finished work on the cross opens the door to freedom, victory, and abundant life in the power of the Spirit. Let’s walk through what He accomplished and how it changes everything for us today. 🔥
The Power of Tetelestai: A Declaration of Completion
In the ancient world, tetelestai carried weight across many areas of life:
- A servant would say it when the assigned task was fully done.
- A judge would declare it when justice was satisfied.
- An accountant would stamp it when a debt was paid in full.
- An artist would sign it when the masterpiece was complete.
- A priest would proclaim it when the offering was accepted.
Jesus used this word to announce: The job has been completed! The mission of salvation is done. No more striving. No more religious performance. It is finished.
Bold truth: The cross wasn’t a partial payment or a down payment—it was paid in full. Hallelujah! 🙌
1. He Fulfilled the Law and Paid Our Debt in Full
The law of Moses could never save us because of our sinful nature. But God did what the law could not do:
“For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:3-4 ESV)
Jesus became the perfect sacrifice. He canceled the record of debt that stood against us:
“…by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:14 ESV)
He is now the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9 ESV).
Because of the cross, your guilt is gone. The penalty has been paid. You are forgiven and free to walk in the Spirit’s power!
2. He Conquered Sin and Death
One man’s sin (Adam) brought death and bondage. But through Jesus Christ, we receive abundant grace and righteousness:
“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17 ESV)
Jesus took on flesh so that through His death He could destroy the one who has the power of death—that is, the devil—and deliver us from lifelong slavery to the fear of death (Hebrews 2:14-15 ESV).
Bold truth: Death no longer has the final word. The resurrection power of the Holy Spirit lives in you!
3. He Defeated Satan and Delivered Us from Darkness
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.” (Colossians 1:13 ESV)
Because of the cross, you can stand strong against temptation:
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
And you can walk in victory because Satan’s power to accuse you has been stripped away:
“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” (Colossians 2:15 ESV)
Because of the cross, you are not a slave to fear or accusation. The enemy is defeated, and the Holy Spirit empowers you to overcome!
4. He Reconciled Us to God and to One Another
Jesus tore down every dividing wall:
“For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility… So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” (Ephesians 2:14, 19 ESV)
Through the blood of Jesus, Jews and Gentiles, men and women, every tribe and tongue—we are one family in Christ. The cross brings true unity in the body of Christ, empowered by the same Holy Spirit.
5. He Secured Your Complete Salvation from Start to Finish
Your salvation is all God’s work—from beginning to end:
“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6 ESV)
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV)
Bold truth: The same grace that saved you will keep you and finish the work in you. Rest in the finished work of Jesus while pressing forward in the power of the Holy Spirit!
