Sin Grows from the Seeds of Selfishness 🌱

The Hidden Root Destroying Our Love in These Last Days

Have you ever wondered why the world feels colder, harsher, and more divided than ever? People seem quicker to criticize, slower to show kindness, and love appears to be fading fast. Jesus warned us this would happen as we approach the end times.

“And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12 ESV)

This is not just a cultural shift — it’s a spiritual reality. Sin is on the rise, and where sin increases, genuine love decreases. As followers of Jesus filled with the Holy Spirit, we are called to recognize this battle and fight it with the power of God’s love.

πŸ”₯ The Two Greatest Commandments — And Their Deadly Opposite

When someone asked Jesus which commandment was the most important, He gave us the foundation for all of life:

“And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matthew 22:37-40 ESV)

If loving God fully and loving others sacrificially is the heart of God’s will, then sin is simply the opposite: failing to love God and failing to love people.

Sin is always unloving.
Sin is always selfish.

It promises satisfaction but delivers emptiness, disorder, and broken relationships. The Christian fire of the Holy Spirit within us convicts us of this truth and empowers us to live differently.

⚠️ The Warning Sign We Can’t Ignore

Jesus didn’t sugarcoat the future. In Matthew 24, He described the signs of the end times, and one of the clearest markers is the cooling of love:

“And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12 ESV)

Look around. Rudeness is rising. Criticism spreads like wildfire on social media. Families are fractured. Churches sometimes feel more like battlegrounds than places of revival.

Why? Because as sin multiplies, love grows cold.

The Holy Spirit is sounding the alarm: We cannot afford to let selfishness take root in our hearts.

🌿 Selfishness — The Root of Every Sin

James gives us a powerful diagnostic tool:

“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.” (James 3:16 ESV)

Every sin traces back to self-centeredness.
We dress it up with nice-sounding excuses:

  • “I’m just looking out for myself.”
  • “They had it coming.”
  • “I deserve this.”

But at the core, sin is choosing me over God and me over others.

The Apostle Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, nailed it:

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23 ESV)

And again:

“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3 ESV)

Bold truth: Selfishness is not a small character flaw — it is the seed from which every evil thing grows. It chokes out the fruit of the Spirit and grieves the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

πŸ™Œ Why You Are Really Here — Your True Purpose

God did not create you to live for yourself. You were made by God and for God.

“For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:36 ESV)

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)

Your life only makes sense when it is centered on Jesus Christ.
Whatever you build your life around — career, relationships, hobbies, success — that thing becomes your god.

But the Holy Spirit calls us higher.
You were created to:

  • Know God intimately
  • Enjoy sweet fellowship with Him
  • Be filled and led by the Holy Spirit
  • Love others with God’s supernatural love
  • Bring glory to Jesus in everything

Sin always pulls the focus back to self.
The abundant life Jesus promised comes when we surrender self and live for Him.

πŸ’₯ Choose Love — Starve Selfishness

Here’s the good news for every believer baptized in the Holy Spirit: We don’t have to live in selfishness!

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you (Romans 8:11). He produces fruit that directly opposes selfishness:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…” (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)

Practical steps to let love grow and selfishness die:

  1. Start your day with surrender — Pray, “Holy Spirit, fill me afresh and help me love God and others today.”
  2. Catch selfish thoughts — When jealousy or “me first” rises, repent quickly and ask God to replace it with love.
  3. Practice small acts of love — Serve your family, encourage a friend, show kindness to a stranger — these are powerful weapons against self-centeredness.
  4. Stay in the Word and in prayer — The Bible renews your mind and the Holy Spirit empowers your will.
  5. Walk in the Spirit — “If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25 ESV)

Where love abounds, selfishness cannot thrive.

πŸ› A Prayer to Uproot Selfishness and Ignite God’s Love

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your Word that shines light on the darkness in our hearts. Forgive me for every time I have let selfishness take root and allowed my love to grow cold. I repent and turn from self-centered living.

Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit right now. Baptize me in Your fire and power. Help me love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Teach me to love my neighbor as myself — not with my own weak love, but with Your supernatural agape love.

Uproot every seed of jealousy, pride, and selfish ambition in my life. Let the fruit of the Spirit grow strong in me. Make me a bright light of love in these last days where lawlessness is increasing.

I choose today to center my life fully on You, Jesus. May everything I do bring glory to Your name.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Let’s live differently, Church. In a world growing colder, let the fire of the Holy Spirit make us burn brighter with love.
